How to Play Hellas Online

A short guide to the basics. Hellas Online is a free browser strategy MMO set across 4,800 islands of the ancient Aegean. You build a city, train armies and fleets, found or join a kingdom, and compete for relics and territory in a single permanent world. No pay-to-win, no resets.

Build your polis

Start with one town on a small Aegean island. Eight building categories (economy, military, culture, government, science, religious, harbor, defense) - level them up to unlock new units, faster production, and higher population caps. Workers are assigned per building from your town's population pool. Idle workers earn nothing, so balance your buildouts.

Train armies and fleets

Twenty ground units across melee / ranged / cavalry / siege roles, plus a full navy from Bireme to Steam Ironclad. Every unit has counters, costs, and travel speed. Real-time combat resolution: you send the army, it travels at the speed of its slowest unit, and the battle plays out on arrival. Defender always sees what's coming and has time to react.

Found or join a kingdom

Solo play works for the early game; kingdoms unlock late-game. A kingdom is a player-led alliance with shared chat, kingdom-scoped research bonuses, declared wars, signed treaties (peace / NAP / alliance), and the ability to claim island territory through capital placement. Government type (Chieftain, Council, Republic, Tyranny) unlocks role-based bonuses.

Trade across the seas

Build a Trading Center to post offers in your island marketplace or the global market. Auto trade routes ship resources between your own towns on a schedule, with travel time scaled by distance. Tenders and Landing Craft are dedicated cargo ships. The naval economy is real - shipping requires actual ships, not magic.

Research the technology tree

Four branches - military, economy, science, culture - with about 35 techs across them. Some unlock new units (Hoplites, War Elephants, Steam Giants, Aero Cruisers), others modify existing ones (Archery +25% archer attack), and some buff economy or research speed. Late-game: Steam Engineering, Naval Artillery, Aerial Reconnaissance.

Capture relics and win wars

Five relic types scattered across the islands grant kingdom-wide bonuses (military boost, production boost, research boost, defense boost, vision). Capture them by clearing the guarding NPC camps. Hold them by holding the islands. Relics flip when their island is conquered.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hellas Online really free to play?
Yes. There is no paid subscription, no premium currency, and no pay-to-win shortcut. The whole game is funded by the operator on a small VPS in Finland. You can play forever without paying anything.
Will the world ever reset?
No. The single Hellas world is permanent. Cities, kingdoms, treaties, and battle history persist - your progress carries across years, not seasons.
How long does it take to learn?
The in-game tutorial walks you through the first town, your first soldiers, and your first battle in about 20 minutes. Strategic depth (kingdoms, diplomacy, naval war) opens up over the first few weeks.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes. Hellas Online is a Progressive Web App - install it from the browser menu on iOS Safari or Chrome Android, and it runs full-screen with push notifications for arriving armies and completed builds.
How does combat work?
Battles are resolved in 1-9 rounds based on attacker vs. defender army composition, terrain, walls, and morale. Each unit type counters specific others (e.g. Spearmen counter Cavalry, Archers counter Slingers). The Battle Report shows every round and every loss.
What's the difference between a town, an island, and a kingdom?
A town is your city. An island holds 2-6 town slots that any player can claim. A kingdom is a player-formed alliance that can declare war, sign treaties, and capture island territory.
Are there bots or NPCs?
Yes - robber camps spawn on islands and offer early-game targets to raid for resources, military experience, and prestige. Hard camps guard relics and require coordinated attacks.
How do I reach the operator if something goes wrong?
Email privacy@hellasonline.xyz, post on the forum at forum.hellasonline.xyz, or send an in-game message to any player tagged (Admin). Bug reports go through the in-game Help section.
